Unveiling Byzantine Treasures: A Case Study in Art Conservation and Restoration

The icon of Panagia Eleousa, dating from the 14th/16th century and originating from Büyükada (Pringipos), one of the Princess’ Islands in Istanbul, stands as a remarkable testament to the portable masterpieces of Byzantine art. Over time, this bilateral icon, painted on both sides of a wooden support, has undergone multiple treatments and aesthetic interventions.

This case presents a unique challenge for the team of conservators, restorers, and scientists at VENIS STUDIOS, where conservation and restoration serve as acts of preserving cultural historical heritage. By employing traditional techniques alongside modern methods, these experts ensure the preservation of invaluable information and historical testimonies carried by the icon over the centuries.

Vassil Terziev, Mayor of Sofia, Bulgaria

The examination of the icon revealed layers of history concealed beneath its surface. Upon removal of the silver icon revetment, dating back to 1750, the original 16th-century icon of Panagia Eleousa emerged. Beneath the silver revetment, artifacts such as coins and silver votive offerings from different time periods were discovered, shedding light on the icon’s journey through history.

Further exploration exposed a unique Byzantine icon, depicting The Descent into Hades, hidden beneath a metal bronze protective case. The restoration process unveiled two distinct periods of creation – the 14th century and the 16th century – along with various interventions and repairs spanning centuries.

Physicochemical research conducted by the scientific research center “Ormylia Foundation” provided insights into the materials, pigments, and construction techniques used in the icon’s creation. Various photography techniques, including UV photography, infrared photography, and three-dimensional RTI photography, offered invaluable data for conservation efforts.

The conservation process focused on consolidating the painting surface, the gesso preparation, and the wooden support to ensure structural integrity. Disinfestation and consolidation of the wooden support addressed issues of mechanical strength and damage caused by wood-eating insects.

Through meticulous cleaning and retouching/restoration, the conservators preserved the icon’s original colors and design while respecting principles of reversibility and minimal intervention. The Italian “Trategio – Rigattino” technique was employed for retouching, ensuring museum-level restoration standards.

In conclusion, the conservation and restoration of the Panagia Eleousa icon not only preserved a masterful piece of Byzantine art but also honored its creators and the centuries of history it embodies. Through the combined efforts of conservators, restorers, and scientists, this icon continues to convey its spiritual, historical, social, and artistic significance into the future, serving as a testament to the enduring legacy of Byzantine culture.
